چکیده

This paper presents a new method for accelerating intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) optimization using voxel sampling. Rather than calculating the dose to the entire patient at each step in the optimization, the dose is only calculated for some randomly selected voxels. Those voxels are then used to calculate estimates of the objective and gradient which are used in a randomized version of a steepest descent algorithm. By selecting different voxels on each step, we are able to find an optimal solution to the full problem. We also present an algorithm to automatically choose the best sampling rate for each structure within the patient during the optimization. Seeking further improvements, we experimented with several other gradient-based optimization algorithms and found that the delta-bar-delta algorithm performs well despite the randomness. Overall, we were able to achieve approximately an order of magnitude speedup on our test case as compared to steepest descent.

Reducing dose calculation time for accurate iterative IMRT planning.

A time-consuming component of IMRT optimization is the dose computation required in each iteration for the evaluation of the objective function. Accurate superposition/convolution (SC) and Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculations are currently considered too time-consuming for iterative IMRT dose calculation. Thus, fast, but less accurate algorithms such as pencil beam (PB) algorithms are typically u...

Abstract ID: 17988 Title: Improve PTV Dose Distribution by Using Spatial Information in IMRT Optimization

ID: 17988 Title: Improve PTV Dose Distribution by Using Spatial Information in IMRT Optimization Purpose: The spatial distribution of radiation dose within the PTV does have clinical significance. For instance, if hot/cold spots in the PTV cannot be avoided, high doses are preferred to be located in the center, and low doses at the peripheries. However, traditional plan optimization models for ...

GPU-based ultrafast IMRT plan optimization.

The widespread adoption of on-board volumetric imaging in cancer radiotherapy has stimulated research efforts to develop online adaptive radiotherapy techniques to handle the inter-fraction variation of the patient's geometry. Such efforts face major technical challenges to perform treatment planning in real time. To overcome this challenge, we are developing a supercomputing online re-planning...

Iterative Approach for Automatic Beam Angle Selection in Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Planning

Introduction: Beam-angle optimization (BAO) is a computationally intensive problem for a number of reasons. First, the search space of the solutions is huge, requiring enumeration of all possible beam orientation combinations. For example, when choosing 4 angles out of 36 candidate beam angles, C36 = 58905 possible combinations exist.  Second, any change in a   beam 4 config...

An Automated Treatment Plan Quality Control Tool for Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy Using a Voxel-Weighting Factor-Based Re-Optimization Algorithm

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) currently plays an important role in radiotherapy, but its treatment plan quality can vary significantly among institutions and planners. Treatment plan quality control (QC) is a necessary component for individual clinics to ensure that patients receive treatments with high therapeutic gain ratios. The voxel-weighting factor-based plan re-optimizatio...
